Where I am Going

Two groups of people. Two groups mystified by the statements of the One who spoke with authority. Two very different promises. And all about His comment, "Where I am going..."

To the priests and Pharisees and Temple police, Jesus said, “I am only with you for a short time. Then I’m going to the One who sent Me. You will look for Me, but you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” Then the Jews said to one another, “Where does He intend to go so we won’t find Him? He doesn’t intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does He? What is this remark He made: ‘You will look for Me, and you will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?” Jhn. 7.33-36 HCSB

To His followers, Jesus encouraged, “Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going.” “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where You’re going. How can we know the way? ” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." Jhn. 14.1-6 HCSB

One group denied who He was, from Whom and where He came, and didn't understand where He was going.

The other knew Who He was, from Whom He had been sent and from where He came. But even they did not initially understand what He meant when He told them where He was going.

Yet what a contrast in His responses. To the first He said that where He was going, they wouldn't know nor even be able to find Him. And worse, where He was going, they could not come.

But to His followers He assured that they knew the way to where He was going. In fact, He promised He would return to take them where He was and that they would be with Him. "Where I am going, you will be with Me. I am the Way."

If you know Him, be encouraged. You not only know where He was going, but where you are going as well. Regardless of the hardships and problems in this temporal state, you can echo the words of the gospel recording, "Where I am Going" by Glen Campbell, written by Jimmy Webb:

Feel like I'm coming out of the storm
Watching dark clouds drift away
Saying goodbye to all the pain I used to know
It's time to let it go.

Just can't seem to make myself conform
To what the world wants me to be
But the difference doesn't hurt me anymore
I know they'll welcome me.

Where I am going there will be no compromise
No tears will come to cloud my eyes
Where I am going.

And all the precious world I've had to sacrifice
Will be given to me twice
Because He paid the price
And it's worth it all just knowing
Where I am going.

Do you want to go riding with me
To a place that lasts forevermore
Please don't think that you are one among the few
I'm different just like you.

Where I am going there will be no alibis
No might-have-beens or sacrifice
Where I am going.

And all the questions still unanswered in my mind
Lord, I'll leave them all behind.
I'll only find the answers
I'll only keep on going
Where I'm going.
